Ramadan is a month of purity and blessing, which includes the act of fasting and abstaining from any sinful acts between sunrise and sunset – better known as suhoor and iftar. Fasting is one of the obligatory Five Pillars of Islam and serves as the fourth pillar. Aside from the countless lessons, fasting teaches us to be humble and spare a thought for those around the world who do not have nourishment as readily available to them. In this month the act of charity is greatly rewarded, as it is a month of helping and giving to those less fortunate than ourselves. There are many ways of giving in this month, such as fundraising, volunteering your time for a good cause, providing nourishment to those suffering from poverty, sponsoring a child, donating towards a good cause, helping the elderly; and the list can go on. The point is, this holy month is not just about abstaining from food and drink, it serves as a reminder of those who have no access to the things we take for granted; keeping us humble and grounded. The beauty of this blessed month is the privileges and blessings so readily available to us in the form of reward.
